Magic Funday hosted by IBM Ring 123 A Real Magic Convention Disaster (or how not to run a magic convention) When Carl Bajor Ran the Magic Funday (a semi-annual 1 day magic convention in New Jersey), for the most part it was a well oiled machine. Now that Dick Swamby and IBM ring 123 have taken over the magic Funday it has deteriorated to a total failure. In fact I looked up ring IBM 123 in the ibm national register their not listed so now you have a bogus made up IBM ring and a disaster of a convention being run by a disorganized figure head. The Magic Funday is a semi annual magic convention held in New Jersey every 6 months. The next Funday is October 14th 2007 as with any magic gathering, there are both high and low points. Unfortunately there are only low points at Swambys one day fiasco. When you have to pay 40.00 a head to attend a one day magic convention it should be something worth going to. It should leave a lasting memory in the minds of the magicians and dealers that attend. The dealers should want to fight each other to get tables at a convention. Sadly Magic Funday convention leaves a depressed look on the faces of the magicians who attend once, and say they will not attend again. Attendance has slowly gone down to a mere 75 to 100 people at any given time This is due in part to the so called IBM ring 123 and Swamby's mis-handling of the convention. I have been to many conventions in my 40 years as a magician and there is an excitement and electricity in the air at these magic events which is not present at Magic Funday, I have attended my fair share of Carl Bajor Fundays so I know what I am talking about with regard to this convention. Even in the worst years of the Tannen Jubilees, or Hank Lee’s Cape Cod Conventions when the acts were poor and the lectures were boring at least the squeeze and grins/ meet and greets were electric, meeting new magicians learning new magic moves and just the atmosphere of the Tannens Jubilee and Cape Cod conventions were electric. Magic Funday with Carl Bajor at the Helm always gave me a good feeling when I left and it kept me coming back. Under the IBM ring123 (bogus ring as far as I can tell) and it's unorganized figure head Dick Swamby is a wet rag compared to even the smallest local magic clubs get together I have attended. This is in part do to Dick Swamby and IBM ring 123. Mr. Swamby is the most unorganized Show organizer I have ever seen. He has a committee (IBM Ring 123 a bogus magic ring not part of the IBM charter but using the IBM name) who bought and paid for the Funday rights from Carl Bajor. The Funday committee IBM ring123 I assume controls the Funday operation with Swamby being a figure head with no skills, or tools to run the convention. I have heard from many of the staff members who used to work Carl Bajor’s conventions and now work for Swamby, They say that he and IBM ring 123 have really driven the convention into the ground and that he really does not have the ability to run the Magic Conventions. It seems apparent to me as an attendee that there is more than some truth truth to what they say. Aside from the acts and the dealers being mediocre at best, There are items are being sold by dealers that unrelated to magic, high priced dealers who tell attendees not to purchase from other dealers at the next table dealers who engage in verbal arguments with other dealers right in the middle of the convention floor. Dealers who bad mouth other dealers. In addition the magic attendees are separated from the dealers during the lectures so that they cannot purchase items from the dealers during the lecture. When the dealers complain that they are not getting customer traffic. During the lecture there complaints are ignored. The Auctions are terribly un-organized and the bottleneck at the door as you arrive makes you want to turn around and leave. There is no sense of magic camaraderie at this convention. People just walk around waiting for the auction to begin. The Auction is a mish mosh of magic and non magic items unrelated to magic for the most part, and what magic that is auctioned is unsuitable to use in any magic act. People are allowed to bring items to the auction that are unrelated to magic and tie up the auction time. The auction usually finishes late and there are items still left to be auctioned at the end. The auctioneer for the most part does not know what he is doing and spends more time talking about the history of the prop rather than the auction of the prop. And finally the dealers leave before the evening show realizing that the customer won’t be there to purchase the items because most of the attendees leave before the evening show. So with respect to magic Funday spend the time with your family or get a Magic Show booking don’t waste your day at a convention that will cost you 40.00 with no return on your investment not even a decent memory.
